See details below: --- The Climate Future Forum and CCMAC are excited to announce the 2024 Climate Future Forum and Youth Climate Summit on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the Hawai’i state Capitol! The Climate Future Forum portion in the morning is for youth (ages 14-26), use the QR code to register! The mission of the Climate Future Forum (8:30am-Noon) is to inspire youth to be active and engaged participants in the 2025 legislative session on climate policy and legislation. The event will bring together youth (ages 14-26), educators, policymakers, and supportive organizations to evaluate and discuss climate action priorities and provide tangible steps to empower youth and give them agency in policy. Our hope is for youth to forge relationships with policymakers so that they can continue to work together throughout the 2025 legislative session at the county, state, and national levels. The Youth Climate Summit (open to all ages of youth and their families) is to immediately follow at noon. The mission of the Youth Climate Summit is to connect interested youth of all ages with various organizations who work in the sustainability and/or climate change sectors. The whole family is welcome to participate and learn about how Hawai'i's youth can become leaders in the climate space. There will be interactive booths, prizes, and more! In honor of UN Day, we are reminded of the 6th Annual American Leaders Advancing the SDGs co-hosted by the UN Foundation and Brookings Institution at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, where the Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council advocated for the importance of connecting culture and place-based knowledge in achieving and advancing the global Sustainable Development Goals with island and indigenous communities serving as a North Star. Hawaiʻi SDG Youth Council Representative Kinohi joined a moderated panel and discussed incorporating the value of Aloha into Hawaiʻi's local interpretation of the SDGs for their meaningful implementation: “In the Hawaiian language, alo means face, and hā means the breath of life. Phew… these last few weeks have been BUSY! 🌱 Swipe through the photos to see what we’ve been up to: 🌳The Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference was a great success with over 1,400 participants! We hosted a table in their Exhibitor Hall and connected with numerous partners and organizations doing AMAZING things in the field of conservation, like lab-grown mosquitoes to curb their populations to give endangered birds a fighting chance. We asked attendees, “What do you envision for the future of Hawaiʻi?”, an important question we should all be thinking about. So tell us, what do YOU envision for Hawaiʻi’s future? 🌊Waimea Valley HGG Volunteer Day: we spent the day prepping koa seeds, sorting through good and bad ones, and getting rid of the weevils that chose koa seeds as their snack. Then we got a tour of the garden where we learned about native Hawaiian plants such as ʻilima, koa, naupaka, pōhinahina, ʻōhiʻa lehua, and more! 🤝Our Q3 Policy & Legislation meeting was in person this time! We met at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, where we hosted Vice Speaker Greggor Ilagan, Senator Hashimoto, and Governor’s Senior Advisor, Blake Oshiro, who all shared their thoughts on the 2024 Legislative Session. 💪Gals with LEI 2024 Global was an event hosted by the East-West Center that celebrated the Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Inspiration of women business and social entrepreneurs in generating jobs and strengthening communities. Did you know that Target 5 (Transportation) of the Clean Energy Transformation Goal shows Hawaiʻi’s statewide petroleum use up until 2023? ⚡ This goal is tracking fuel use in ground transportation as established in the Hawaiʻi Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI). However, marine and air transportation also play a critical role in determining the sustainability of Hawaiʻi's transportation future.💡 One of the key strategies to meet the HCEI goals is to reduce Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). Managing statewide travel demand, particularly that in urban areas, is essential for Hawaiʻi to meet its petroleum reduction goals for ground transportation.🚗 VMT reduction includes increasing opportunities for residents and visitors to shift their transportation mode choice (for example from cars to bicycle and pedestrian-friendly corridors), improving transit operations (such as biking and car share), and using commuter benefits.🚶‍♀️ What do you think is the best way to reduce fuel usage? It's World Oceans Day! Did you know the Aloha+ Challenge includes the goal of increasing the effective management of Hawaiʻi's nearshore marine waters to 30% by 2030? This goal is measured by tracking the percentage of Hawaiʻi's nearshore marine waters designated as Marine Managed Areas (MMAs). 🌊🌍 Effective management of Hawaiʻi's MMAs means we need a combination of approaches balancing sustainable use, restoration, and conservation measures such as 🤝community-based management, time and area closures for 🐬fisheries replenishment, reasonable laws to encourage sustainable fishing practices, and effective enforcement. 💚✨ Hawaiʻi also has a Ocean Health Index (OHI) to measure the health of Hawaiʻi's ocean resources! 🌿 The OHI global framework was adapted into six goals for measuring ocean health in Hawaiʻi: Food Provision (Offshore Fisheries, Nearshore Fisheries, and Mariculture), Coastal Protection, Biodiversity (Habitats and Species), Economies & Livelihoods, Sustainable Tourism, and Sense of Place. 🤝💧 Intrigued? It's International Day of 🚫Zero Waste🚫, so it's the perfect time to highlight this AMAZING film made by Alexandra Kahn on the Plastic Ban (Bill 40) that was implemented by the City & County of Honolulu in 2019! ♻️🌍💚 In 2019, a group of individuals worked with the city council of Honolulu, HI to introduce the most ✨comprehensive single-use plastic ban✨ at the time. Many of the folks involved had worked for over a decade on some version of this bill, without success. However, in 2019 the movement grew through youth leadership, social media, and the community's desire for long lasting and significant change. 💪💫🌱 Alexandra Kahn, Director of the ReUnite US Film: "By the end of 2019, I had chronicled the whole process of Bill 40 going through Honolulu city council and wasn’t sure what to do with the footage. I was with a friend who works in environmental policy for California and was telling him about the process of the bill and that I had filmed all the meetings, hearings and events related to the ban. His first thought was that I should make a movie to tell the story. I didn’t think I could, because I had never tried to tell a documentary story before and I hardly had any interviews compiled. A few months later, Covid broke out, the world shut down, and I suddenly couldn’t work. As the entire world changed around me and my daily behaviors were forcefully altered, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to make the film. It took 4 years, hundreds of hours, dozens of volunteers, and countless FaceTime calls with my mom (co-editor) and my composer (based in Colorado), but I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome!" It's Hawaiʻi Climate Week!! 🤩🌿💫 DAY 1️⃣ The Climate Week Conference kicked off earlier this week with the rollout of the ✨Fifth National Climate Assessment✨ (NCA5), featuring guest speaker, Dr. Jane Lubchenko, and a panel of NCA5 authors! Participants then divided into breakout groups to discuss next steps for the various topics like Food and Water, Human Health, and Indigenous Knowledge. 🌱💫 Later that day, the Climate Action Day event featured Lahaina Community Speakers, a shareback and discussion on the NCA5, and the launch of the state's Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP)! 💚🌍 DAY 2️⃣ The second day started with a Graduate Scholars Symposium focused on emerging scientists working towards climate adaptation. These graduate students presented their science-to-management research in topics as diverse as forest restoration, coral reef health, sea-level rise impacts and planning tools, and supporting development of sustainable sea transport. 🌳🌊🪸 In the afternoon, the Agroforestry and Climate Resilience session brought together a diverse group of agroforestry practitioners, agency representatives, academics, and students to explore the role of agroforestry in climate change resilience.
